Governor Tom Ridge |
Governor Tom Ridge, First Secretary, Department of Homeland Security gave the Opening Keynote Address, “Preparing for the Unknown: Crisis Management”. Continuity of Operations and Crisis management have become issues of paramount importance. Tom Ridge, the nation's first secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, offered a candid view of America’s national readiness and response capabilities and compared that to the business challenge of managing today’s sometime volatile economic and business climate. Ensuring continuity, remaining operational and communicating transparently are vital to managing an unforeseen event. Having led the Unites States’ readiness and response efforts for nearly four years following the aftermath of 9-11, Ridge detailed the primary strategies for managing risk as well as responding in the event of a corporate or organizational crisis.
Conference Sessions
Conference sessions were held many subjects including: Homeland Security-Counterterrorism that educated on terrorist tactics, with an emphasis on Al Qaeda operations in the U.S. and the U.K.; Interoperability & Communications sessions that provided case study examples of public safety, emergency management and other interoperability projects from across the nation; IT & Physical Security sessions focused efforts to prevent, protect and respond to an attack on IT/cyber or physical infrastructure with an emphasis on issues raised by the convergence of the two; Planning sessions that assisted with short- and long-term planning decisions affecting an enterprise or jurisdiction's ability to prevent, prepare, respond or recover to a terrorist attack or natural disaster; and Resources sessions that provided information for securing federal grants, how much money is available and what types of free products and services are available from the federal government.
